Solness Le Constructeur (1892)appartient au dernier cycle de l’œuvre de théâtre d’Ibsen et la pièce recèle une valeur largement testamentaire. Bien que le héros éponyme ne se reconnaisse pas la moindre formation technique en architecture, Halvard Solness est un grand bâtisseur de demeures susceptibles d’abriter le bonheur des êtres. À ses débuts inventifs, porté par un souffle créateur, Solness a su tirer du néant des églises et des tours à la gloire du tout-puissant dans l’audace crâne d’un tête-à-tête. Sa carrière a pris son envol sur les fondations tragiques d’une catastrophe personnelle, l’incendie de la maison parentale de son épouse Aline, où ont péri leurs deux garçons. Sur les cendres, le père s’est employé à re-construire et à re-présenter, à mimer et à imiter les œuvres de la création, les rêves des hommes et leurs faux châteaux de nuages. Le sentiment de culpabilité étouffe le démiurge, un conquérant dont la gloire repose sur le malheur familial. De plus, l’architecte n’a jamais hésité à écarter ceux qui lui faisaient de l’ombre, l’adjoint Brovik par le passé et le fils de ce dernier aujourd’hui.
Un vaudeville assez grotesque de séries TV
Est-il possible de construire des foyers humains dignes de ce nom ? Les êtres n’ont-ils pas besoin d’autre chose pour être heureux ? L’interrogation métaphysique existentielle ne cesse de hanter le constructeur au faîte de sa carrière, ivre de son pouvoir, avide de vivre de façon juvénile malgré l’usure du temps et incapable de transmettre ses acquis à ses collaborateurs et successeurs. Le maître est versé dans le vol de la joie de vivre des autres jusqu’au moment où surgit à ses côtés, Hilde Wangel, une métaphore de la jeunesse libre et de l’absolu du désir. Les certitudes s’ébranlent peu à peu en l’intime du bâtisseur qui consent finalement à reconnaître l’approche de la mort. La mise en scène de Hans Peter Cloos fait de cette œuvre grave et singulière un vaudeville assez grotesque de séries TV. Jacques Weber dont le talent est immense est peu crédible dans le personnage de Solness, poussif et las physiquement. La jolie Mélanie Doutey qui joue Hilde pose un peu trop en post-ado juvénile et fébrile face au vieux monsieur digne. On se demande ce qu’Edith Scob en épouse, et Sava Lolov en médecin, sont venus faire dans cette galère. L’œuvre ibsénienne souffre d’une réorchestration réductrice au goût du jour.
