C’est en 1999, trois années après l’écriture de Shopping and Fucking, pièce qui lui valut une notoriété internationale, que Mark Ravenhill a signé Some Explicit Polaroids. Texte aux accents réalistes et aux intentions politiques, cette nouvelle œuvre scrute la société contemporaine dans ses aspects les plus quotidiens, les plus pragmatiques, parfois les plus crus, pour en dénoncer les mouvements délétères. Reprenant certains thèmes de Shopping and Fucking, Mark Ravenhill stigmatise ici un monde de l’argent et de la marchandisation qui a vu disparaître les grandes idéologies des années 1970. C’est le constat amer auquel un ancien activiste d’extrême gauche (Arno Feffer) doit faire face lorsqu’il recouvre la liberté, à la fin des années 1990, après une peine de quinze ans de prison purgée pour avoir enlevé et torturé un chef d’entreprise (Patrice Pujol). Il retrouve alors son ancienne compagne (Carole Leblanc) qui, ayant depuis longtemps abandonné ses combats de jeunesse, est rentrée dans le rang pour tenter de faire carrière en politique. Il se mêle également à un groupe de noctambules (Erwan Daouphars, Pierre Grammont, Johanne Thibaut), jeunes gens qui se laissent gagner par les élans matérialistes et nihilistes de leur époque.
Des éclats de réel qui restent superficiels
Dans Some Explicit Polaroids, Mark Ravenhill place face à face, aussi bien que dos à dos, les années 1970 et 1990. Stigmatisant une fin de XXème siècle qui a vu l’argent, la peur et l’individualisme transformer l’espace social en jungle (dixit l’un des personnages), l’auteur britannique propose à la scène des éclats de quotidiens qui pourraient constituer, sinon de véritables coups de poing (le texte est sans doute insuffisamment puissant pour cela), du moins des moments de saisissements permettant aux spectateurs de mettre en œuvre une forme de réflexion sur les penchants de notre société et les inflexions de l’histoire contemporaine. Mais pour cela, il aurait fallu que la représentation créée par Patrick Verschueren parviennent à restituer tout le concret, tout le tranchant, toute l’immédiate vigueur de Some Explicit Polaroids. Or, ce n’est pas le cas. Trop flou pour faire jaillir les textures et les reliefs de ces instantanés théâtraux, le spectacle de la Compagnie Ephéméride renvoie à des tableaux souvent sans consistance. Des tableaux à travers lesquels n’apparaissent que les couches les plus superficielles de la pièce de Mark Ravenhill.
