Sous le regard du comédien et metteur en scène Alvis Hermanis, Sonia de Tatiana Tolstaia est un bon exemple de synthèse de l’art letton, réceptif tant aux influences intellectualisées allemandes qu’à l’émotion russe. L’intérieur réaliste du Leningrad des années 40 est investi par le rôle féminin muet que joue un acteur véritable tandis que le rôle du narrateur est confié à un non professionnel, un décalage admirable recherché par l’artiste. Les acteurs sont comparables à un duo de clowns, le triste et le joyeux, le muet et le parlant : « La guerre et la mort sont présentes, elles enveloppent tout, et surtout les pensées du personnage féminin et les paroles du masculin. » Sonia est naïvement manipulée par les autres et par l’Histoire. Elle a rencontré un homme qui en fait son jouet, jusqu’au jour où elle pense qu’il est mort au front. Le mélodrame vient de ce qu’elle est prête à tout sacrifier pour lui jusqu’à la folie, croyant malgré tout en son amour et en son destin. Du tragique en perspective, mais de la drôlerie aussi, comme dans la vie.
