La violoncelliste Sonia Wieder-Atherton explore depuis de longues années la mémoire musicale juive. Son programme de « Chants juifs » est né de sa recherche sur la musique liturgique. « Je me suis intéressée à des mélodies de différentes sources, mais ce qui m’a véritablement inspiré, c’est le chant des cantors, ou ‘hazans, et son expressivité intérieure, intime, contenant pourtant une telle force d’expression. Dans cette musique, le populaire et le sacré se confondent. Qu’elle soit gaie ou triste, lente ou rapide, prière, chant populaire ou encore danse, elle est toujours partage et intimité. J’ai senti que je connaissais cette musique depuis toujours, depuis bien avant ma naissance, c’était une impression étrange » confie la violoncelliste. Ce voyage musical nous conduit aux quatre coins du monde, y compris vers l’Espagne et l’Amérique du Sud (avec Salgan et Piazzolla) ou l’Angleterre de Benjamin Britten avec la Sonate en ut pour violoncelle et piano composée en 1961 pour Rostropovitch. Au piano, près de Sonia Wieder-Atherton, un musicien d’exception apte à tout jouer ou presque avec le même brio et la même finesse : le pianiste Bruno Fontaine.
