“ La Babel de notre siècle, l’esperanto de notre temps, le passeport pour n’importe quel chemin, c’est la musique. Je dirais même plus : la culture est la meilleure monnaie. ” Avec un tel prénom, Lenine ne pouvait qu’être un artiste au verbe militant. La cause est entendue depuis longtemps, pour ce troubadour rétro-futuriste qui croise les sillons fertiles de sa tradition, le Nordeste brésilien, avec les musiques glanées dans le monde entier. Résultat : un cocktail épatant, à consommer sans modération, tout particulièrement sur scène.
C’est dans le cadre du direct que Massacre prend également tout son sens. Un nom tout aussi prédestiné, qui annonce les intentions de ce trio né dans la Babylone new-yorkaise, au virage relevé des années 80, expérience aux limites de tous les genres, à situer quelque part entre no wave et future funk. Un quart de siècle plus tard, les héros ne sont pas fatigués : on peut compter sur la basse survitaminée de Bill Laswell, la guitare éclectique de Fred Frith et la batterie pleine d’énergie de Charles Hayward pour faire exploser les canons stylistiques et les clichés périmés.
Se méfier des a priori, c’était encore la déclaration d’intention de la Black Rock Coalition, collectif né en 1985 pour réinvestir le champ du rock, un domaine qui, avant d’être la propriété quasi privée des Blancs, fut exploité par la communauté des fils du blues. Il convient de le remettre dans l’histoire de la Great Black Music, avec en tête l’esprit original de Bo Diddley et de Louis Jordan. De ces deux pères fondateurs, il sera forcément question entre les lignes dans ce show en hommage au parrain de la soul et père du funk que reste pour l’éternité James Brown.
