La voix est juste, folk, ultra timbrée, rompant les fins de phrase ou les suspendant à bon escient. Le style est alternatif, ondulant du rock à la pure rythmique, de la pop planante à la chanson brute, de l’acoustique à l’électro. La langue est multiple, fidèle au berceau helvétique et aux références anglo-saxonnes. Un premier album disque d’or, une tournée sold out, une médiatisation européenne, une belle collaboration avec Peter Brook, et voici le personnage Hunger sur la sellette, attendue autant qu’écoutée.

Sophie Hunger marche sur un fil artistique qui ploie mais ne rompt pas, un fil ténu entre adéquation au XXIème siècle et proposition toute personnelle. Au-delà d’une description littérale de l’album « 1983 » (Universal Music), deuxième album dont le titre flirte avec un morbide R.I.P. et un autoportrait concis, au-delà d’un cynisme existentiel transpirant de l’ambiance et des textes, on ne peut qu’écouter interdit sans trop chercher à décrypter le pourquoi du surmoi, et cette étrange douceur pessimiste à laquelle on s’attache par la force tranquille de la musique.
