Still Life signifie « nature morte », et Angelin Preljocaj en profite pour jouer sur les mots en entremêlant dans sa création les allégories de la mort et la vacuité de la vie, dans une sorte de danse macabre inspirée des Vanités de la peinture du XVIIe siècle, arborant tous les symboles du temps qui passe (crânes, bougies, instruments de mesure, montres et sabliers…), et de la vanité des distinctions sociales, dont se moque le destin. Dans cette proximité avec la Mort, Angelin Preljocaj distille un érotisme trouble et quelques images choc, tandis que son écriture opère une formidable synthèse entre sa veine dramatique et son désir d’abstraction et de liberté. En première partie, Ghost, commande du Festival Diaghilev de Saint-Petersbourg pour le bicentenaire de la naissance de Marius Petipa, rêve des fantômes qui hantaient le créateur du Lac des cygnes. Là encore, Eros et Thanatos font bon ménage, avec tutus bouillonnants et dessous de dentelle rouge… pour rendre visible l’invisible.
