Avec René Loyon et la traduction de Jean-Michel Déprats et Marie-Claire Pasquier, Soudain l’été dernier de Tennessee Williams acquiert sur la scène un regain de fraîcheur à travers le verbe renouvelé et l’éloquence de l’imaginaire. C’est que les métaphores du monde extérieur, les paysages du monde et des hommes et les images des rapports de société jouent subtilement grâce à la poésie de l’écriture. Qu’il s’agisse du jardin d’intérieur du fils de famille disparu, habité de plantes insectivores comme les attrape-mouches de Vénus. Qu’il s’agisse des Incantadas – les Îles Enchantées des Galapagos – dont le spectacle des grandes tortues de mer pondant leurs œufs dans le sable, fascine Madame Venable et son fils. Le défunt, poète visionnaire dont la vie est l’œuvre, retourne un an plus tard dans le sable « devenu vivant sous un ciel si noir » pour assister à l’éclosion des tortues et à leur fuite éperdue vers la mer. Des rapaces ailés carnivores descendent en piqué sur les tortues naissantes dont peu atteindront la mer.
Révélation funeste
Qu’il s’agisse de la plage de Cabeza de Lobo avec ses boîtes en fer-blanc pour percussions dans des mains enfantines, le long d’une rue au soleil aveuglant, où le fils homosexuel connaît une fin tragique de victime sacrifiée par une bande affamée, « une horde de petits moineaux noirs déplumés ». La leçon de choses est rude et violente, comme les sciences de la vie et de l’homme si inégal sur la terre, qu’il soit riche ou pauvre, du Sud ou du Nord, blanc ou de couleur, étranger, fou : différent. La cousine, compagne de voyage, assiste à la révélation funeste des secrets inavouables et des vengeances accomplies sur son cousin, refusant les mensonges d’une société inique dont ceux de sa tante perdue dans un rêve jaloux de grandeur. L’excès de chaleur tropicale et la crudité de la lumière solaire ont servi de révélateurs à la nature de l’être. Sous le regard de René Loyon, la grande Agathe Alexis est une mère cérébrale et austère. La nièce « malade » depuis la scène initiatique est incarnée avec l’émotion de Marie Delmarès. Clément Bresson donne au frère attiré par le gain l’âpreté voulue. Les autres comédiens sont tous vrais. Une mise en scène solaire dans l’enfer ténébreux des ombres infernales et dans l’étouffement capiteux des non-dits coupables.
