Dans des bas-fonds invisibles et secrets, vit tout un peuple de paumés, de clandestins et de réfugiés qui ont choisi « de vivre comme des taupes insomniaques, méchantes et dézinguées ». Ces êtres mixtes, sortes de monstres ou doubles déformés des humains, empruntent aux différents genres scéniques les conditions de leur naissance : « ni marionnettiques, ni masqués, ni réalistes », ils semblent sortis d’un délire expressionniste et loufoque et composent ensemble « un monde résolument pictural à la fois cinématographique et chorégraphique ». Epuisés, colériques et haineux, mais drôles aussi voire terriblement attendrissants, ces êtres ont choisi de vivre en dehors de la société, par dégoût de sa tristesse et de son individualisme. S’inspirant des Bas-fonds de Gorki et reprenant bon nombre de ses personnages, Claire Dancoisne a imaginé une histoire sans mots, « optimiste, joyeuse, bourrée d’inventions, d’humour et de révolte », tragique, certes, mais donnant sens au présent par le miroir qu’elle lui tend.
