« Au gré des années, le Soweto Gospel Choir s’est aguerri aussi bien professionnellement que spirituellement. La formation a non seulement fait découvrir au monde entier les talents que recèle notre pays, mais elle a aussi permis à chacun de ses membres de grandir et de mûrir. Le chœur est devenu une famille soudée qui s’illustre par un altruisme qui lui fait honneur… Ils ont tous parfaitement conscience de la chance qui est la leur et ont fait du respect et du partage des valeurs cardinales. Que Dieu les bénisse ! » Prix Nobel de la Paix, l’archevêque Desmond Tutu a parrainé en 2004 ce chœur créé deux ans plus tôt. Accompagnés ou non par quatre musiciens, les vingt-six membres qui le composent ont choisi de représenter la diversité de leur pays, en chantant dans six des onze langues officielles mais aussi en s’inspirant de la grande variété rythmique de ce pays mosaïque. C’est ainsi qu’ils ont su diffuser leur message au-delà de leurs espérances, à travers un répertoire qui célèbre les standards du gospel et chante les louanges des chants typiquement sud-africains. Depuis, tout en s’illustrant sur le terrain musical, glanant entre autres deux Grammy Awards, ces chanteurs venus du ghetto emblème de l’Apartheid ont également multiplié les bonnes actions, à commencer par la fondation « Nkoni’s Haven Vukani », qui vient en aide à des centaines de sud-africains touchés par l’épidémie du Sida.
