Trois comédiens animent des centaines d’objets mécanisés fabriqués de matériaux hétéroclites récupérés ou détournés et donnent corps aux esclaves glorieux qui, derrière Spartacus, résistèrent à la toute-puissance tyrannique de Rome. Deux chanteurs lyriques incarnent la voix des Romains surpris et scandalisés par le sursaut insolent des gueux et des asservis. Une arène en forme d’amphithéâtre sablé voit naître les lieux du conflit sanglant et ceux où s’agitent les instances qui liquideront la liberté : sénat, thermes, champs de bataille, villas et cirque cruel. Claire Dancoisne imagine une grande fresque épique, marionnettique et opératique, opposant la morgue arrogante d’un empire vaniteux et la résistance audacieuse de miséreux désespérés et lumineux préférant la mort à l’esclavage. La révolte de l’an 73 avant JC est l’occasion pour l’inventive femme de théâtre de créer un spectacle surgi de la rencontre entre tous les arts de la scène. Un bestiaire sensationnel, des masques, des homoncules miniatures : l’imaginaire du spectateur est sollicité par cette osmose de la chair et de la ferraille, de l’humain et de l’objet, du jeu et du chant qui donne naissance à un péplum fantastique composé de tableaux poétiques et originaux, héroïques et brutaux, intimistes et sublimes.
