« Avec Square, nous cherchons à confronter l’écriture chorégraphique baroque à une musique contemporaine répétitive pour démontrer la modernité savante développée au XVIIIe siècle par les Maîtres à Danser. », explique le chorégraphe Bruno Benne qui a nommé sa compagnie Beaux Champs, clin d’œil en forme d’hommage au maître à danser de Louis XIV, Pierre de Beauchamp. Sa démarche : s’affranchir des codes tout en les respectant. Au plateau sont réunis quatre musiciens sur instruments anciens (violons, viole de gambe et théorbe) et quatre danseurs pour interpréter la partition minimaliste de Youri Bessières – la danse étant indissociable de son rapport à la musique tant elle est structurée pour la donner à voir. Avec sa géométrie et ses règles très mathématiques, la chorégraphie construit une architecture rigoureuse et complexe, tout en finesse, en élans, en trajectoires. Voilà qui ne pouvait que plaire à Lucinda Childs, icône de la danse minimaliste et artiste invitée dans cette production originale, pour intervenir en amont dans ce processus commun à la danse et à la musique.
