« Trop séculière, trop sensuelle, trop divertissante pour un sujet religieux » : ainsi Heinrich Heine décrivait-il le Stabat Mater de Rossini. Mais c’est précisément pour ces raisons que la partition, créée à Paris en 1842, paraît si séduisante. Musique sacrée d’envergure aux côtés de la Petite Messe solennelle et de la Messa di gloria, la pièce adopte un langage théâtral guère surprenant de la part d’un compositeur si prolifique à l’opéra. Ses mélodies empreintes d’humanité recèlent parfois des inquiétudes quasi mozartiennes tandis que ses chœurs amples évoquent le faste italien. Qu’on l’associe davantage à de la musique profane ou sacré, ce Stabat Mater constitue indiscutablement un petit bijou de musique vocale. Sonya Yoncheva fait partie du quatuor de solistes qui l’interprète, aux côtés du Chœur de Radio France et de l’Orchestre de chambre de Paris dirigé par Domingo Hindoyan.
