Avec son Stabat Mater, créé en 1842, Rossini sortait d’un long silence, treize ans après le succès de son dernier opéra, Guillaume Tell. Il renouait ainsi avec son public parisien, qui n’avait pas de peine à retrouver, dans ces pages sacrées d’un compositeur jusqu’alors assez peu porté sur la chose religieuse, la verve qu’il avait mise auparavant dans ses opéras bouffes ; certains jugèrent, du reste, que la grâce presque hédoniste du Sancta Mater n’avait guère sa place dans une église. Quoi qu’il en soit, c’est une musique qui réclame un complet engagement des chanteurs, et des solistes comme de l’orchestre. Avec Patrizia Ciofi, Sarah Connoly, Paolo Fanale et Nahuel di Piero et la direction de l’énergique et racé James Gaffigan, cette version de concert, précédée de la Troisième Symphonie de Schubert, ne devrait pas décevoir.
