Dans les bas-fonds de Naples, Marie éructe son amour vésuvien pour Jésus, son fils, qu’elle recherche désespérément en insultant tout ce que l’Etat a pu inventer d’entraves et de garrots. L’ancienne prostituée crache et vitupère dans une langue gouailleuse et verte. Jésus a été arrêté et mis au secret et Marie se fait louve, hydre et chienne enragée pour tâcher de retrouver son petit, fruit de ses entrailles qui ne se sont jamais tout à fait remises de se l’être laissé arracher par la vie… Pour Annie Mercier, qui interprète ce rôle titanesque, «cette Stabat Mater qui se tient imperturbablement debout symbolise toute l’énergie des femmes qui se battent à travers le monde». La comédienne, dont la présence scénique intense peut se mesurer aux exigences de cette logorrhée foisonnante, s’empare de la déchéance lumineuse et des hoquets sublimes de cette madone insensée, ivre de vin, d’amour absolu et de dévotion sacrilège.
