C’est en partie grâce (ou à cause, tout dépend du point de vue) de lui que la basse électrique est devenu un véritable instrument soliste capable d’être « l’attraction » dans un groupe. L’événement, il l’a d’ailleurs souvent créé au sein de Return To Forever ou du trio all-star SMV (avec Marcus Miller et Victor Wooten). Stanley Clarke, c’est du coup le type de virtuose qui n’a plus rien à prouver et qui en profite pour étonner et se faire plaisir. Dans Up, son dernier album en date, il rend hommage à George Duke (son ami disparu en 2013), au Baron Charles Mingus et même à Batman (« Gotham City »). Et surtout, il fait chanter sa basse avec une (apparente) simplicité qui va à l’encontre des clichés qui peuvent circuler sur les héros de l’instrument.
