Après Peer Gynt, les Revenants et Brand, vous parcourez l’oeuvre du dramaturge norvégien Ibsen.
Stéphane Braunschweig : Ibsen est un auteur dont je connais l’œuvre homogène qui décline une même problématique sous des angles variés. Plus jeune, je considérais ce théâtre comme bourgeois et ses questionnements sociaux et moraux comme datés, si ce n’est le poème épique à part Peer Gynt que j’ai travaillé en 1996. Or, après avoir lu le théâtre d’Ibsen, je me suis aperçu que Peer Gynt contenait les thèmes matriciels des pièces ultérieures. Je me suis passionné pour cet auteur, dont j’ai monté Les Revenants,puis un autre poème épique Brand. Je présente aujourd’hui Une maison de poupée, piècetrès connue, en miroir avec Rosmersholm,moins connue. Le diptyque est à voir séparément ou intégralement. Les pièces sont traversées par les mêmes questions à l’intérieur d’un projet plus large pour cette saison à La Colline, qui s’intitule « Rêves d’héroïsme et de radicalité ».
Les personnages d’Ibsen sont-ils héroïques ?
S. B. : Quand on aborde Une maison de poupée – un univers assez apaisé à travers un couple qui vit une harmonie du quotidien liée à de petits compromis -, on s’aperçoit que Nora, le personnage féminin a une double vie qui la conduit à se rêver l’héroïne d’une autre existence où elle serait la salvatrice de son mari. Ce portrait héroïque qu’elle se fait d’elle-même la conduit, après beaucoup de désillusions, de masques tombés et d’envies de suicide, à poser un geste radical : quitter son mari et ses enfants. À l’inverse dans Rosmersholm, on part d’une situation dans laquelle les personnages épousent davantage la radicalité. Le couple du pasteur Rosmer, dont l’épouse s’est suicidée un an auparavant, et de Rebecca West suscite étrangeté et interrogations. C’est un couple platonique, une amitié entre homme et femme, une relation qui se veut pure, fondée sur l’élévation de l’être humain. Or, le pasteur Rosmer est en rupture avec son projet qui se brise sur les transgressions de ces deux êtres. Rebecca a fasciné Freud, c’est un personnage mystérieux qui dévoile peu à peu sa personnalité et son histoire.
Comment se manifeste la radicalité dans l’œuvre d’Ibsen ?
S. B. : PourIbsen, l’épanouissement individuel ne peut advenir que dans la rupture avec l’héritage et l’hérédité. Peer Gynt veut être « soi-même », mais à force de détours et de fuites face à l’engagement, il ne fait que réaliser le rêve de sa mère qui le voulait roi du monde : il devient empereur de soi-même. Brand choisit d’emblée le refus de l’héritage, et Nora pose un acte de rupture avec son mari et à travers lui, avec son père. C’est la question posée de l’individualité et de l’individualisme, et le déni de l’idée qu’on serait le rêve de ses parents pour leur bon plaisir. Rosmersholm est cette propriété transmise en héritage de génération en génération de pasteurs. Rosmer rompt avec cette tradition. Les deux pièces sont reliées par cette radicalité.
Quel rôle jouent le compromis et le mensonge dans la vie des personnages ?
S. B. : Ibsen est lucide, on ne peut pas s’en sortir sans radicalité destructrice, et c’est une contradiction. Cette question ne semble pas réglée dans l’œuvre d’Ibsen, et en cela elle est très moderne. La relation de Nora et de son mari est visiblement fondée sur des masques. Peut-on fonder une vie sur des mensonges ? Les mensonges recouvrent des réalités inconscientes profondément enfouies qui, quand elles explosent, détruisent.
