Comment se passent les répétitions de La ville morte?
Stéphane Degout : Il s’agit d’une reprise de la production de Willy Decker, avec une distribution complètement nouvelle. C’est la première fois que je chante cet opéra. J’y incarne deux rôles, ceux de Frank et de Fritz, qui, d’une certaine façon, peuvent se concevoir comme un seul et même personnage. La musique de Korngold est toujours ciselée, très bien écrite vocalement et particulièrement riche au niveau orchestral. Je suis plus habitué à la taille des formations Mozart ! Dans la construction de l’opéra, La ville morte me rappelle beaucoup Ariane à Naxos de Richard Strauss. On pense aussi souvent à Wagner ou à Berg… Tout l’opéra est imprégné de l’ambiance Vienne 1900. Par ailleurs, le contact avec le chef Pinchas Steinberg, qui est particulièrement sévère et rigoureux, se passe très bien.
Qu’attendez-vous du travail d’un metteur en scène à l’opéra ? Etes-vous plutôt adepte des réactualisations ou des lectures traditionnelles ?
S.D. : J’ai une grande faculté d’adaptation. Je n’arrive jamais à la première répétition avec une idée préconçue de mon rôle ou avec la volonté de faire passer un message. J’aime me laisser imprégner par l’atmosphère. J’attends du metteur en scène qu’il me guide, m’encadre en me donnant des éléments concrets. A l’intérieur de cela, je développe une certaine liberté. Je garde de très bons souvenirs du travail avec Stéphane Braunschweig sur La Flûte enchantée de Mozart ou avec Patrice Chéreau sur Cosi fan tutte. Le contact a été troublant mais passionnant avec Krzysztof Warlikowski. C’est quelqu’un de névrosé, qui travaille de manière obstinée sur la notion de souffrance. Pour lui, une personne qui ne souffre pas ne doit pas se produire sur une scène théâtrale. Je ne suis pas forcément d’accord, mais cette optique radicale est souvent touchante. Je suis donc très satisfait des cinq années de Gérard Mortier à la tête de l’Opéra de Paris, qui a eu le courage de mettre un coup de pied salutaire dans la fourmilière en faisant venir des metteurs en scène de théâtre.
Vous chantez régulièrement la musique baroque et classique. Que vous ont apporté les spécialistes de l’interprétation historique ?
S.D. : J’ai eu la chance de travailler notamment avec William Christie, René Jacobs, Emmanuelle Haïm… Aucun ne m’a demandé de changer techniquement ma voix. Ils ont tous accepté que je sois d’une autre « école ». Par contre, ils sont très pointilleux sur la partition : il y a un style particulier à avoir et il faut être très clair dans la pratique de l’ornementation. Avec eux, on revient vers quelque chose d’essentiel. Je ressens la même chose dans le cadre du récital avec piano.
Vers quel type de rôle comptez-vous aller ?
S.D. : Pour moi, il y a eu un avant et un après Pelléas. Cela a été un passage obligé pour aller dans l’avenir vers des rôles plus lourds, comme Wolfram dans Tannhaüser de Wagner ou Posa dans Don Carlos de Verdi. Avec Korngold, j’ai d’ailleurs mis le doigt dans l’engrenage !
