Quelle place prend ce nouveau projet cuivré dans votre projet général ?
Stéphane Guillaume : Cet album est d’abord le nouveau projet de mon quartet qui existe depuis 2003. J’avais envie depuis longtemps de composer avec le son d’un brassband. Mon écriture s’est donc tournée vers la rencontre entre ce quartet et un ensemble de cuivres que j’ai formé avec des solistes que j’admire et connais bien. Il s’agit de bien autre chose que d’un « ajout » de cuivres, avec des choses très contrapuntiques dans l’écriture. Le fait d’écrire pour des pupitres de deux avec deux trompettes, deux trombones, deux cors et un tuba implique un style d’écriture radicalement différent de celui du big band. Il faut imaginer des mariages de timbres, en pivot avec le sax. Il n’y a pas de piano dans l’orchestre. La répartition harmonique doit être pensée autrement, avec la guitare qui a un son très médium. Tout cela crée quelque chose d’assez curieux…
La musique s’apparente presque à un concerto pour quartet de jazz et orchestre de cuivres…
Stéphane Guillaume : Le mot « concerto » renvoie évidemment à une forme précise mais dans l’idée c’est ça ! Un véritable dialogue s’est créé entre un quartet existant et une entité cuivres. Pour le brassband, j’ai choisi des musiciens capables d’avoir cette espèce de double culture classique et jazz/musique improvisée pour aboutir à une véritable « dream team ». L’écriture exigeait que le son soit très rond à la manière d’un brassband classique. Les morceaux sont écrits pour être exécutés par tel ou tel musicien. Je peux mettre un nom, un son et un visage sur la partition. Ce sont des personnalités très fortes qui apportent beaucoup à mon discours et à celui du quartet.

Au départ de ce projet, il y a évidemment l’amour des cuivres…
Stéphane Guillaume : J’ai toujours aimé le son de l’harmonie de cuivres classique. Je suis fasciné par ce mouvement de la Deuxième symphonie de Mahler qui commence par les cuivres, sans oublier les big bands qui ont été mes premiers amours dans le jazz. Dans mes influences, dans le registre de l’écriture musicale, je vénère aussi Kenny Wheeler. Je l’ai beaucoup écouté avant d’entrer dans ce projet ! L’envie vient de là. C’est sûr.
Quelle est la clé du titre de l’album : « Windmills Chronicles »?
Stéphane Guillaume : Dans ces « chroniques du moulin à vent » se trouvent l’idée de contes et de légendes, mais aussi celle de vent et de souffle… Je baigne tout le temps et depuis toujours dans divers mondes musicaux. Je suis un boulimique : j’adore la musique brésilienne, le flamenco, les musiques africaines, etc. Et dans ma manière d’écrire surgissent des réminiscences de tout ça. Le moulin à vent capte et brasse toutes les poussières que le vent peut lui apporter !
