Saxophoniste surdoué du jazz européen, admiré Outre-Atlantique par Peter Erskine et Vince Mendoza, Stéphane Guillaume propose depuis 2003 à la tête de son quartet régulier un des projets musicaux les plus intenses du jazz français. Ce groupe composé de Frédéric Favarel (guitares), Marc Buronfosse (contrebasse) et Antoine Banville (batterie, percus) vient de signer avec « Windmills Chronicles » (chez Gemini Records) un disque audacieux et passionnant ouvrant un dialogue avec un grand ensemble de cuivres composé de quelques-uns des meilleurs musiciens français de la spécialité. « J’avais envie depuis longtemps de composer avec le son d’un brassband. Il s’agit de bien autre chose que d’un « ajout » de cuivres… Le fait d’écrire pour des pupitres de deux avec deux trompettes, deux trombones, deux cors et un tuba implique un style d’écriture radicalement différent de celui du big band. Il faut imaginer des mariages de timbres, en pivot avec le sax. Il n’y a pas de piano dans l’orchestre. La répartition harmonique doit être pensée autrement, avec la guitare qui a un son très médium. Tout cela crée quelque chose d’assez curieux… » confie Stéphane Guillaume. La présentation sur scène de ce projet, créé à l’issue d’une résidence à l’Opéra de Lyon en juin 2008, est un authentique événement. Une musique d’une force et d’une fraîcheur rares.
