D’où sont partis Les Arpenteurs, géographiquement et symboliquement ?
Stéphane Olry : L’idée symbolique est celle du mètre universel apte à unifier les mesures, l’une des revendications majeures du Cahier de Doléances de l’Assemblée Constituante de 1792. Soit une façon de donner à l’humanité la première mesure universelle, le mètre « valable en tout temps pour tous les peuples », issu de ce que l’humanité a en commun, c’est-à-dire la taille de la planète sur laquelle nous marchons. Ce mètre universel mesurerait un dix millionième d’un quart de méridien terrestre. Il reste à mesurer un quart de méridien terrestre. Deux astronomes sont missionnés pour l’expédition : Pierre Méchain part de Barcelone pour remonter vers le Nord tandis que Jean-Baptiste Delambre descend vers le Sud depuis Dunkerque. De quelle façon vous êtes-vous approprié cette histoire ?
S. O. : Donner le mètre universel à tous est une idée généreuse et exaltante de la part des Révolutionnaires, une utopie extraordinaire avec ses limites, ses échecs, ses falsifications. Il faut revisiter ce lieu de mémoire en marchant le long du méridien pour tenter d’explorer ce que nous avons à faire ensemble. Sept personnes ont suivi une ligne arbitraire – puisque la ligne du méridien est une abstraction – en inventant leur propre chemin. Tous les intervenants ont leur manière de marcher et de rapporter des éléments. Jean-Christophe Marti n’a marché que la nuit pour enregistrer les sons dans les forêts de la Creuse et de l’Allier. Nicolas Kerszenbaum a marché depuis Dunkerque jusqu’à la Loire, en demandant tous les soirs l’hospitalité à un ami, ou à un ami d’ami ou encore à un ami d’ami d’ami. Kenji Lefèvre-Hasegawa s’est déplacé de village en village en camping-car transformé en studio d’enregistrement dans lequel il a pu interviewer les étrangers originaires des pays traversés par le méridien. Espagne, Algérie, Mali…
Soit une kyrielle d’expériences personnelles pour les sept arpenteurs à travers leur emprise du territoire.
S. O. : Successivement, chacun des sept intervenants a accompli un fragment différent sur une distance de mille deux cents kilomètres et sur un espace temporel de deux années. Pour exemple, les franges urbaines entre ville et campagne dans le Val d’Orge nous ont passionnés. Même si la forêt n’existe plus là, sa trace en est inscrite. Depuis un an, nous sommes en résidence au Théâtre de Brétigny-sur-Orge : chaque arpenteur a fait le compte-rendu public de son arpentage. À la Chartreuse de Villeneuve Lez Avignon, nous avons « échangé » entre arpenteurs. Ensuite, j’ai écrit une sorte de geste qui reprend ce matériau des arpenteurs que j’ai filtré en tenant le journal de l’aventure. Avec la collaboration artistique de Corine Miret, le projet est poétique et politique : tout le monde prend la parole le long du méridien, mettant en lumière le rapport de chacun avec l’autre dans l’accident et l’inattendu. C’est vivre ensemble dans le partage qui importe, une fort belle idée républicaine. Le voyage est la traversée d’un territoire aléatoire, une coupe abstraite dans l’aventure des relations de compagnonnage et de travail.
