Que retenez-vous du roman de Cocteau ?
Stéphane Vérité : Cocteau nous décrit une fusion extrême entre un frère et une sœur, sans pour autant lever certaines ambiguïtés : relation amoureuse, incestueuse ? La cellule familiale est répartie entre deux enfants, avec des rapports tout à la fois filiaux et maternels. On est donc simultanément en empathie et effrayé par ces personnages. Philip Glass a synthétisé le roman en privilégiant une narration classique. Contrairement à d’autres compositeurs contemporains, il n’a pas cherché à déstructurer la trame littéraire. Glass a toujours été attiré par l’œuvre de Cocteau et a d’ailleurs également composé des ouvrages d’après La belle et la bête et Orphée.
Quelle scénographie avez-vous imaginée pour cet opéra ?
S.V. : Il y a deux grands espaces dans l’œuvre de Cocteau : la chambre des enfants et un hôtel dans lequel les enfants recréent leur chambre du début. J’ai décidé de reprendre l’idée poétique de Cocteau, qui parle d’îles, de lieux à la dérive. J’ai donc imaginé des plateaux assez réduits qui permettent de resserrer l’action. Quant à la vidéo, je l’utilise comme un support de narration. Les images offrent une relecture d’un décor d’opéra, comme une toile peinte. J’aime utiliser la vidéo comme une machine à illusion, notamment en matière de perspective. Les costumes, enfin, évoquent les années d’après-guerre. Je n’ai pas voulu réactualiser cet ouvrage, qui me semble vraiment ancré dans le temps.
Avez-vous réussi à trouver des chanteurs qui ont l’âge des personnages ?
S.V. : Dès le départ, je voulais trouver une distribution qui corresponde à la réalité de l’histoire. La dimension juvénile est essentielle. Nous avons donc auditionné des chanteurs pouvant s’approcher de l’âge des personnages, qui sont censés avoir, dans le roman, 17 et 18 ans. Nous avons trouvé des chanteurs qui ont entre 22 et 27 ans, à la voix encore fraîche.
Après les représentations à l’Opéra de Bordeaux, vous avez un projet de film-opéra sur Les Enfants terribles…
S.V. : Je suis actuellement en pleine discussion avec les producteurs. La musique de Glass se prête vraiment bien à l’image. L’idée est de filmer cet opéra dans des décors à la fois naturels et virtuels. La problématique de la musique à l’image, marquée autant par le Don Giovanni de Losey que par Les Parapluies de Cherbourg de Demy, me passionne. Outre le travail sur les images numériques, nous aurons aussi une vraie réflexion sur le son lui-même, qui sera capté en direct.
