« C’est un livre extraordinaire qui me revient très souvent dans les mains. »
Pourquoi avoir choisi de porter à la scène ce roman de Tarjei Vesaas ?
Stéphanie Loïk : C’est un livre extraordinaire qui me revient très souvent dans les mains, qui resurgit de façon récurrente. Un de ces livres que l’on offre à ses amis et qui circule. Je l’ai déjà monté en 2002, mais là j’ai demandé à Joël Jouanneau de l’adapter, afin d’appréhender le texte à travers un autre regard, une autre manière de faire. Par rapport aux oeuvres très politiques que je monte, ce roman représente un aspect différent de mon travail, plus intérieur. Dans cette même veine, j’ai aussi créé Neige de Maxence Fermine, évoquant une quête initiatique à travers la glace, où les gens tombent sans que l’on sache s’ils se suicident ou pas. Palais de glace constitue ainsi le second volet d’un diptyque. C’est l’un des derniers romans de Vesaas, comme Les Oiseaux adapté l’an dernier par Claude Régy.
Comment restituer sur la scène une histoire aussi secrète et intérieure ?
S. L. : L’histoire retrace un amour exceptionnel entre deux petites filles de onze ans, Siss et Unn. Une nuit, Unn, qui porte un secret dont on ne sait rien, disparaît jusqu’au mystérieux palais de glace. Avec Joël nous avons eu l’idée de ne pas montrer les deux petites filles. Siss (Daniela Labbé Cabrera), celle qui survit, vient revoir des années plus tard la tante (France Darry) chez qui habitait Unn, et toutes deux dialoguent, se souviennent, essaient de comprendre. Nous écoutons aussi les voix enregistrées des enfants lors de flashbacks, mais il me fallait un élément supplémentaire pour exprimer la force fusionnelle de leur relation. Lorsque j’ai vu les apprentis de l’Académie Fratellini – Pauline Barboux et Jeanne Ragu – pratiquer la corde, j’ai été fascinée : cette manière d’aller du sol au ciel, cette gémellité et cette grâce extraordinaire correspondaient de façon évidente, sensible et subtile à l’union étrange et forte des fillettes.
Comment donner forme aussi à l’imaginaire si riche qui caractérise le roman ?
S. L. : L’auteur déploie une description complètement cinématographique de la nature. Tout ce que ne raconte pas le texte de Joël, la musique omniprésente de Jacques Labarrière le raconte. Les craquements de la glace et des arbres, le vent qui souffle, l’intériorité du souvenir de Siss, qui demeure si présent…
