Selon la formule consacrée, on ne présente plus le pianiste californien de Londres, unanimement considéré comme une personnalité profonde et intègre de son instrument. Et l’équation Kovacevich = Beethoven est probablement l’une des moins discutables de celles utilisées couramment par les mélomanes et journalistes musicaux. Inlassablement pour lui comme pour nous, c’est précisément dans Beethoven, compositeur auquel il a dédié nombre d’enregistrements éloquents, dont une intégrale des sonates (gravée sur une période de douze ans) et des Diabelli historiques, qu’il ouvre et referme son récital parisien avec les Bagatelles opus 126 n° 1-2-5 et 6 puis la pénultième Sonate n° 31 op.110. Schubert, petit frère beethovénien par excellence, complète idéalement le programme, lui aussi représenté dans une alternance de miniatures (les délicieuses Danses allemandes D 790 et le Moment musical n°6) et de partitions d’envergure avec la sublime Sonate D 959. Un programme magnifique et équilibré où s’épanouiront l’intensité, la quête de sens et le dépouillement de Kovacevich.
