Stephen Kovacevich a signé il y a quelques années chez EMI une intégrale marquante des sonates de Beethoven, réalisée sur une longue période de plus de douze ans et révélant la relation intense, patiemment construite et profondément sentie que le pianiste cherche à construire avec une partition. Cette somme discographique éclaire l’affinité exceptionnelle du pianiste avec le monde beethovénien qui reste la pierre angulaire de son répertoire. « Lorsque j’étais enfant, c’était un compositeur que je n’aimais pas du tout. Et puis à 17 ans, j’ai entendu les Variations Diabelli par Serkin et cela a tout changé. J’aime toujours par-dessus tout les œuvres de la fin de sa vie » confie Kovacevich. Ce sont ces célèbres et géniales Variations qui rayonnent au centre du programme de son prochain récital parisien, témoins d’un autre de ses plus saisissants enregistrements. « Je me pose toujours la question : la musique peut-elle se renouveler et à quel moment ? Plus je travaille ces œuvres, plus je me sens comme un restaurateur d’œuvres d’art, révélant les choses "en dessous"… » ajoute le pianiste. Un récital important.
