Né en 1943 dans l’Ohio au sein d’une famille de musiciens (son cousin n’est autre que Buddy Tate, l’un des saxophonistes historiques de Count Basie), passé par Los Angeles où il étudie l’architecture et la musique auprès de Charles Lloyd, Steve Potts plonge ensuite dans l’euphorie musicale du New York des années 60. C’est là qu’il côtoiera entre beaucoup d’autres, en des temps bénis où le jazz semblait comme secoué d’élans créatifs, Eric Dolphy, Ron Carter, John Coltrane, Jimmy Garrison, Chick Corea, Wayne Shorter et bien sûr Chico Hamilton avec qui il jouera pendant quatre ans. Plus tard, après son installation à Paris en 1970, il liera pendant deux décennies son destin musical à celui de Steve Lacy, tout en multipliant les expériences musicales les plus diverses, jusqu’à accompagner la soprano américaine classique Jessye Norman. Cette véritable légende vivante du jazz contemporain, grande voix du free jazz, joue régulièrement et en toute discrétion au théâtre des Ateliers du Chaudron, du côté de Ménilmontant. Pour son prochain concert, il invite le trio du pianiste Jobic Le Masson composé de Peter Giron à la contrebasse et John Betsch à la batterie à croiser le fer avec l’or de ses saxophones.
