Musicien central et pionnier du mouvement de la musique minimaliste, Steve Reich (né à New York en 1936) représente, bien davantage que son complice Philip Glass, la personnalité musicale par laquelle aura été finalement légitimé, en Europe en particulier, l’avènement d’une autre musique contemporaine. Cette new music radicalement opposée à l’approche conceptuelle du sérialisme – hégémonique à partir des années 50, et dont l’influence reste dominante en France aujourd’hui – assumait un “retour” à la tonalité, à la pulsation rythmique régulière et à une certaine émotion… Philippe Nahon et ses musiciens d’Ars Nova rapprochent deux oeuvres majeures du compositeur qui reflètent idéalement sa démarche : Different Trains pour quatuor à cordes (1998) et City life pour 18 musiciens (1995). Les deux œuvres, composées à trois ans d’intervalle, ont en commun d’intégrer à la trame instrumentale des sons enregistrés : extraits d’interviews de rescapés de la Shoah réalisés spécialement pour le projet dans Different Trains, fragments d’ambiance sonore de la ville de New York (circulation automobiles, sirènes de pompier, communication radio des pompiers de New York lors de l’attentat du World Trade Center, etc.) utilisés souvent comme de véritables éléments rythmiques de la partition dans City Life.
