Eventrés, trafiqués, robotisés. Cinq pianos offrent pudiquement leur carcasse aux regards, silencieux au lointain du plateau, parmi quelques arbres dénudés. Immobiles dans leur entassement vertical. Devant, le ventre du théâtre se dévoile dans la pénombre. Discrètement, la mécanique se met en branle, l’eau se glisse dans l’enfilade de trois bassins, les objets s’actionnent et vaquent à leurs occupations. Tandis que d’insolites conjurations « Karuabu » venues d’ailleurs raillent le calme, la scène se métamorphose à vue et peu à peu prend vie. Bientôt l’image du Marais, tableau de Ruisdael, dresse une forêt en écran qui se découpe en précis reflets sur l’étendue liquide. Une voix off égrène quelques pages tirées des Cartons de mon arrière-grand-père d’Aldabert Stifter (1805-1868), écrivain romantique autrichien. Le temps s’attarde sur cette minutieuse description d’un paysage pris dans les glaces, comme pour aiguiser l’attention aux menus détails, aux infimes bruissements qui révèlent le fragile cœur du réel sous la surface étale.
Une mécanique parfaite
Dans cette partition pour piano sans pianiste, ou pièce de théâtre sans acteurs, Heiner Goebbels imbrique encore d’autres éléments : un concerto de Bach, des interviews de Claude Lévi-Strauss et de Malcom X, La chasse nocturne de Paolo Ucello, des spoken words de William S. Burroughs… entrent en secrète résonance, tandis que l’espace se transforme sans cesse, mu par une force invisible A la manière de Stifter, le compositeur et metteur en scène allemand tisse ensemble plusieurs niveaux de sens. Il trame les sons, les images, les voix, l’eau, les couleurs, le mouvement… comme autant de matières qui captent et questionnent le regard, qui invitent chacun à la rêverie. S’il découvre les artifices de la représentation et montre le hors-champ, évacuant, à sa façon, le sujet, c’est pour que chacun puisse remplir le vide de toutes ces « choses ». Le dispositif scénique, prouesse de précision technique, crée un monde fascinant, ouvert à la méditation. « Le théâtre doit toujours se considérer comme une réalité à part entière s’il veut être de l’art, il ne doit pas croire que son rôle est de faire des déclarations sur la réalité. » dit Heiner Goebbels, qui décidément est l’un des artistes les plus passionnants d’aujourd’hui.
