Créée à Londres en 2004, au National Theatre, un an après le début de l’opération militaire américano-britannique baptisée Liberté de l’Irak, Stuff Happens est née d’une colère et d’une volonté. La colère d’un homme opposé à l’engagement des forces armées de son pays aux côtés de celles des Etats-Unis ; la volonté d’un auteur ayant pour ambition, à travers son œuvre, de constituer un témoignage « sur ce que c’est que vivre à l’époque à laquelle [il vit] : tout d’abord, comme Balzac, en décrivant [son] époque ; mais, aussi, comme Tchekhov ou Brecht, en en proposant [sa] propre vision »*. Bien loin de ces trois grands écrivains, David Hare a amalgamé repères historiques et anecdotes fictives pour donner naissance à un texte sans profondeur qui tient davantage de la charge linéaire et caricaturale que d’une quelconque mise en perspective artistique du réel. Le spectacle présenté au Théâtre Nanterre-Amandiers s’apparente ainsi à une forme de docufiction théâtral collant à l’actualité internationale du début des années 2000, sans jamais parvenir à faire sourdre le moindre élan de pensée ou de théâtre.
Au théâtre comme devant la télévision
George W. Bush (Vincent Winterhalter), Tony Blair (Arnaud Décarsin), Condoleezza Rice (Aïssatou Diop), Donald Rumsfeld (Alain Rimoux), Colin Powell (Greg Germain), Dominique de Villepin (Philippe Duclos)… Les principaux protagonistes politiques de l’époque sont présents, projetés dans un dispositif scénique bifrontal tentant de reproduire de manière hyperréaliste l’image de ces personnalités. Or, cette façon d’appréhender de façon schématique et superficielle ces personnages médiatiques contribue à couper définitivement la représentation de toute possibilité de théâtre. Car, au lieu de tenter de conférer à ce texte manichéen un début de profondeur, d’imaginaire, de jeu ou d’inventivité, le spectacle de Bruno Freyssinet et William Nadylam s’empêtre dans la platitude de l’illustration et la facilité du mimétisme. Ne parvenant pas à pallier le manque d’acuité de la pièce de David Hare, la représentation conçue par les deux metteurs en scène (d’une durée de 2h50…) ne va jamais bien plus loin que l’une de ces productions télévisuelles qui croient instruire le public, mais ne font que l’anesthésier.
