Forme de théâtre traditionnel originaire de l’aire mandingue (aire qui comprend le Mali et les régions de l’Afrique de l’Ouest parlant la langue mandé), le kotèba met en scène de façon burlesque et satirique les dysfonctionnements frappant la vie des communautés villageoises. Réinvesti dans les années 1980 par divers artistes bamakois (dont plusieurs membres du collectif BlonBa), cet art populaire a aujourd’hui quitté les seules zones rurales pour s’épanouir sur les scènes des villes. Après Le retour de Bougouniéré et Bougouniéré invite à dîner, le Théâtre Paul-Eluard de Choisy-le-Roi a demandé à la compagnie malienne BlonBa de créer une pièce de kotèba à partir des réalités de Choisy et, plus généralement, du quotidien des habitants des quartiers de banlieues. C’est ainsi que Sud-Nord, le kotèba des quartiers est né, un spectacle qui, sous forme de fable contemporaine, mêle théâtre et vidéo pour questionner la déchirure nord/sud, pour dénoncer les effets des déséquilibres planétaires sur la vie des individus.
