COMEDIE MUSICALE / THEATRE DU CHATELET
Après A Little Night Music en 2010, Sweeney Todd en 2011, et avant Into the Woods la saison prochaine, le Théâtre du Châtelet continue d’explorer le répertoire de Stephen Sondheim en présentant une pièce très originale, Sunday in the Park with George. Inspirée de Un dimanche après-midi sur l’Ile de la Grande Jatte, cette comédie musicale se déroule d’abord dans les années 1880 lorsque Georges Seurat a peint cette toile emblématique du post-impressionnisme, et ensuite dans les années 1980, alors que son arrière-petit-fils est également confronté aux affres de la création.

Conçue sur un livret de James Lapine pour un petit théâtre du Off Broadway, la pièce n’a été créée qu’avec trois instrumentistes, dans une forme que le compositeur a après coup rapprochée des opéras de chambre de Benjamin Britten. Dans ce cadre intimiste, la partition est truffée de passages vifs et sériels, en un mot pointillistes, qui font écho au principe avant-gardiste de pixellisation que Seurat appliquait dans sa peinture. La nouvelle orchestration présentée au Châtelet modifie en profondeur l’impact de l’œuvre. Quant à la scénographie spectaculaire de William Dudley, elle promet de reconstituer sur scène l’imaginaire de Georges, dans un langage visuel contemporain.
