Voici près de vingt ans que Brigitte Jaques-Wajeman fréquente assidûment l’œuvre de Pierre Corneille, un auteur « qui ose, qui invente et qui trouve, qui a réfléchi sur les moyens et les fins de l’art dramatique comme nul autre », écrit l’ancienne directrice du Théâtre de la Commune. Une œuvre que la metteure en scène a éclairée en créant Horace (1989), La Place royale (1992), L’Illusion comique (2004), Le Cid (2005), mais également un cycle de cinq pièces s’intéressant aux relations entretenues par Rome avec ses « alliés » d’Orient : La Mort de Pompée (1983 et 1992), Sophonisbe (1988), Sertorius (1997), Nicomède (2008 et 2009) et Suréna (1995). C’est cette dernière tragédie que Brigitte Jaques-Wajeman a choisi de recréer au Théâtre des Abbesses, en la mettant en regard avec la version de Nicomède présentée il y a trois ans au Théâtre de la Tempête (version aujourd’hui mise en scène dans un rapport frontal). Mêmes interprètes, même dispositif scénographique (d’Yves Collet, qui signe également les lumières — les costumes sont d’Annie Melza-Tiburce), même thématique de la résistance à l’oppression du pouvoir, mais atmosphères distinctes : Nicomède se laissant traverser par des mouvements de comédie, Suréna s’enfonçant dans la plus grande noirceur.

Car, au sein de cette tragédie sans clarté, l’amour liant la princesse Eurydice au guerrier Suréna va s’opposer aux plans matrimoniaux conçus par le roi des Parthes et signer l’arrêt de mort de quatre innocents. Ici, aucune rémission possible. Les excès d’un pouvoir comme embarrassé de lui-même viennent couper court à toute velléité de liberté individuelle. Explorant les tensions qui agissent entre les ardeurs passionnelles et les concessions faites à la raison, les comédiens (Bertrand Suarez-Pazos, Raphaèle Bouchard, Pierre-Stéfan Montagnier, Thibault Perrenoud, Pascal Bekkar, Sophie Daull, Aurore Paris, Mourad Mansouri) imposent la langue éclatante de Pierre Corneille et nourrissent avec beaucoup d’aisance les transports de leurs personnages. Fougueux, tourmentés, tranchants, ils donnent naissance à de très beaux tableaux, des face-à-face d’une fluidité chorégraphique. Entre élégance distanciée et exaltation charnelle, la nouvelle mise en scène de Brigitte Jaques-Wajeman magnifie les débordements de cette tragédie de l’amour et du pouvoir.
