Depuis votre arrivée à la tête de l’Ensemble Intercontemporain, vous semblez revisiter le répertoire de l’ensemble. Est-ce pour vous « approprier » son histoire ?
Susanna Mälkki : Ce sont des chefs-d’œuvre de notre temps que l’on doit rejouer régulièrement, pour les défendre et les imposer. Le répertoire de l’Ensemble est riche, mais il n’existe que depuis trente ans et ne peut être comparé avec la longue tradition symphonique. J’ai repris par exemple Etymo de Luca Francesconi, qui répondait à une thématique de la Cité de la musique, et s’inscrit d’autre part dans un projet discographique. De même, je connaissais depuis longtemps Messages de feu demoiselle R. V. Troussova de György Kurtág, qui est l’un de mes compositeurs favoris.
Quels répertoires souhaitez-vous apporter à l’Ensemble Intercontemporain ?
S. M. : Depuis mon arrivée, j’ai découvert tout un répertoire assez différent de celui d’Europe du Nord et du Royaume-Uni où j’ai beaucoup travaillé. A l’inverse, j’apporte un répertoire que ne jouait pas – ou peu – l’Ensemble, comme les œuvres des Danois Bent Sørensen et Per Nørgård, par exemple. Il s’agit donc d’un enrichissement mutuel.
« La création est et doit rester une aventure »
La programmation thématique de la Cité de la musique est-elle contraignante ou stimulante ?
S. M. : C’est un défi. Les thématiques sont stimulantes car elles nous incitent à jouer des œuvres que nous n’aurions pas forcément programmées. L’un des thèmes les plus fascinants de la Cité de la musique cette saison a été les « Visions wagnériennes ». Wagner, ce n’est pas seulement une question d’époque, mais avant tout une façon de penser très large, totale. Les choix d’œuvres se sont révélés plus nombreux que nous l’imaginions : de Schreker, stylistiquement proche de Wagner, à Wolfgang Rihm, qui prolonge ce monde de l’opéra romantique allemand, en passant par Bent Sørensen et Karlheinz Stockhausen. L’important est de composer des programmes qui aient une unité, qui dégagent une sonorité d’ensemble. Mais la Cité de la musique n’est pas notre seul lieu de concerts: à l’Ircam, au Centre Georges Pompidou ou au Musée d’Orsay, nous ne proposons pas la même chose, chaque lieu a ses demandes spécifiques. Par exemple, à Orsay, nous nous produisons forcément en formation réduite.
Un autre aspect important de l’activité de l’Ensemble reste la création…
S. M. : Passer des commandes est toujours risqué, mais dans un sens positif. C’est pour cela que l’Ensemble existe. Chaque saison doit trouver un équilibre entre les classiques du xxe siècle, le répertoire de l’Ensemble et les créations. Parfois, les thématiques des concerts peuvent inspirer un compositeur, mais elles ne doivent pas le contraindre. La création est et doit rester une aventure, dans laquelle nous mettons en rapport les jeunes compositeurs et l’expertise de nos musiciens, que ce soit dans le cadre des concerts « Tremplin », dédiés entièrement à la création, ou dans celui plus expérimental d’Agora, la manifestation qu’organise l’Ircam. En juin, j’y dirigerai, outre Grisey, une nouvelle œuvre de Yan Maresz et une création du jeune Yann Robin.
