La musique est en elle-même rituel. Deux des compositeurs inscrits au programme, familiers du théâtre musical et de l’opéra, proposent des œuvres qui, bien qu’exclusivement instrumentales, ont une dimension dramaturgique évidente. Georges Aperghis, avec sa Pièce pour douze (1991) oppose des moments d’éclat – de folie même – au grondement plus ou moins perceptible de la rumeur. On retrouve une idée similaire dans Appels (1974) de Michaël Levinas où, comme chez Aperghis, le cor solo a l’honneur, un temps, du premier rôle. Harrison Birtwistle, quant à lui, fait de son œuvre Cortège (2007) une véritable cérémonie concertante où chaque instrument devient tour à tour soliste puis se fond de nouveau dans le « chœur ». Enfin, Concertini (2005) d’Helmut Lachenmann « démonte » les situations concertantes, déguise les solistes successifs.
