C’est en Chine, à l’ombre méditative des montagnes célestes, que Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui a forgé les paysages imaginaires de Sutra, création pour 21 moines aguerris au kung-fu. Le chorégraphe flamand-marocain, grand admirateur de Bruce Lee dans l’enfance, a passé plusieurs mois au temple Shaolin pour tresser ensemble arts martiaux et danse contemporaine. « J’ai constamment recherché un endroit paisible où je pourrais m’identifier totalement. Aujourd’hui, à 33 ans, je crois l’avoir touché au plus près au temple Shaolin. Je me retrouve dans leur façon d’appréhender la vie, le corps et l’esprit. » confie-t-il. Composée de 21 boîtes de bois à taille humaine, la scénographie du plasticien anglais Antony Gormley joue comme principe dramaturgique, évoquant tantôt un labyrinthe, tantôt une montagne ou un temple. Les moines, souples, nerveux, précis, manient ce savant jeu de cubes comme les pièces d’un espace en mutation, sous le regard de Sidi Larbi Cherkoui, maître d’œuvre, manipulateur ou jeune apprenti… peut-être enfant qui rêve.
