L’œuvre de Rossini est avant tout associée aux genres de la comédie. C’est avec ses farces et autres opéras bouffes qu’il se fait un nom sur les scènes italiennes. En 1812, La Fenice, le grand théâtre d’opéra de Venise, lui passe commande d’un Tancrède, premier succès du compositeur dans le genre du Melodramma eroico. Pour la reprise de l’ouvrage en mars 1813 à Ferrare, Rossini pousse la hardiesse jusqu’à substituer au dénouement heureux de la première version une fin tragique guère dans le goût de l’époque ni conforme à l’image que l’on se fait généralement du « cygne de Pesaro ». Pour réhabiliter, en version de concert, ce versant « sérieux » de l’œuvre de Rossini, Jean-Claude Malgoire confie le rôle-titre au tempérament de feu de Nora Gubisch.
