Avec Tannhäuser, l’Opéra poursuit le renouvellement de son répertoire wagnérien après notamment une production de Lohengrin due au même Robert Carsen (1996, reprise régulièrement) et une de Tristan et Isolde confiée à Peter Sellars en collaboration avec le vidéaste Bill Viola (2005) ; plus tard dans la saison, en mars, Krzysztof Warlikowski présentera quant à lui sa lecture de Parsifal. Œuvre emblématique de l’Opéra de Paris, où elle fut donnée – augmentée de sa fameuse bacchanale – en 1861 dans la salle de la rue Le Peletier sous le regard et l’oreille admiratifs de Baudelaire, Tannhäuser avait souvent été repris au Palais Garnier mais n’avait jamais connu les honneurs de l’Opéra Bastille. Habile et ingénieux créateur d’images scéniques, le Canadien Robert Carsen a signé la mise en scène de ce spectacle présenté en mars dernier au Tokyo Opera Nomori. Le chef Seiji Ozawa, fondateur en 2003 de la compagnie japonaise, faisait à l’occasion son retour après une année difficile qui l’avait vu annuler ses engagements pour raisons de santé. Il emmène ici une distribution de wagnériens confirmés où, aux côtés de chanteurs familiers des scènes parisiennes (Matthias Goerne en Wolfram, Franz Joesf Selig en Hermann, Béatrice Uria-Monzon en Vénus), le ténor américain Stephen Gould fera ses débuts à l’Opéra dans le rôle-titre et Eva-Maria Westbroek dans celui d’Élisabeth.
