« À rebours des lectures qui veulent faire de lui le symbole malfaisant de tous les fanatismes, on peut voir Tartuffe comme un voyou sympathique, séducteur et roublard, un fourbe irrésistible comme les affectionnent la littérature et le cinéma populaires : un genre d’Arsène Lupin déguisé en dévot pour mieux réussir son coup, une crapule charmante dont l’entreprise malhonnête prend des allures de revanche de classe. » L’ignorance du contexte historique de son écriture et une lecture trop unilatéralement anticléricale de Tartuffe ont fait de son personnage éponyme une grenouille de bénitier qu’on se plaît à voir noyée dans le bain où elle s’ébroue. Mais si Tartuffe était plus malin et plus retors que cela ? S’il était celui par qui le scandale arrive, le révélateur de la mesquinerie plutôt que son incarnation ? Benoît Lambert choisit de renverser l’ordre de la représentation, suggérant que Tartuffe est peut-être autrement iconoclaste qu’on ne le présente habituellement…
