Un ange hante la nuit désolée, corps cassé flottant parmi les ombres des vaincus, les cris muets des opprimés. « Du paradis souffle une tempête qui s’est prise dans ses ailes, si forte que l’ange ne les peut plus refermer. Cette tempête le pousse incessamment vers l’avenir, auquel il tourne le dos, cependant que jusqu’au ciel devant lui s’accumulent les ruines. » écrivait Walter Benjamin sur l’Angelus Novus de Paul Klee. C’est cette tempête, sombre et furieuse, que fait souffler Lemi Ponifasio, unissant dans la bourrasque réminiscences shakespeariennes, échos des répressions contre les populations aborigènes et déflagrations de l’après-11 septembre. Natif des îles Samoa, le chorégraphe a fondé la compagnie MAU en 1995, qui renvoie au mot samoan signifiant « ma destinée », « mon point de vue », mais également au mouvement indépendantiste éponyme. Avec Tempest : without a body, il signe un puissant oratorio, où résonnent la danse guerrière du haka, le zen du butô, les traditions des peuples du Pacifique Sud, la pensée du philosophe Giorgio Agamben sur la privation des droits, et la présence de Tama Iti, leader de la cause maorie. Sans aucun folklore mais avec un minimalisme hiératique. « Faire de l’art, c’est se mettre à l’intersection des gens. » dit Lemi Ponifasio…
