La danse depuis longtemps entaille l’entrave des frontières. Ainsi l’extraordinaire aventure des ballets russes de Diaghilev a-t-elle dessiné un dense réseau d’influences qui essaima partout dans le monde, jusqu’en Australie. C’est dans le sillage du Covent Garden Russian Ballet et de l’Original Ballet Russe du colonel Basil, qui, dans les années 30, impressionnèrent si fortement le public, qu’est né The Australian Ballet. Fondé en 1962 sur l’héritage amené par des danseurs russes émigrés, notamment le couple Borovansky, la compagnie a su explorer le répertoire classique et s’aventurer sur les terres contemporaines, tout en développant la polyvalence et l’excellence technique de ses quelque 70 danseurs permanents, jusqu’à s’imposer comme l’une des institutions chorégraphiques majeures de son pays.

Venu pour la dernière fois en France en 1965, au cours d’une tournée européenne où brillèrent Rudolf Noureev et Margot Fonteyn en artistes invités, The Australian Ballet revient avec trois pièces à l’affiche. La Symphonie fantastique de Berlioz, chorégraphiée par le polonais Krzysztof Pastor, et Rites, réglé par l’australien Stephen Page sur Le Sacre du printemps de Stravinsky, avec les danseurs aborigènes du Bangarra Dance Theatre, composent le premier programme, tandis que Le Lac des cygnes, dans la version de l’australien Graeme Murphy, sera présenté pour la seconde soirée. Soient trois œuvres majeures du répertoire pour redécouvrir les lointains héritiers de la tradition classique…
