L’Opéra du gueux (1728) fait partie de ces œuvres toujours citées – il a servi de modèle à L’Opéra de quat’sous de Kurt Weill et Bertolt Brecht – mais peu entendues, moins encore montées sur scène. Pourtant, cet « opéra-ballade », qui déploie le livret plein de verve et de satire de John Gay sur collection de mélodies alors en vogue (pêle-mêle chansons populaires et airs d’opéras italiens de Haendel ou autres), se révèle passionnant. Pour cette production, créée aux Bouffes du Nord, William Christie et les Arts florissants, installés sur scène, proposent une orchestration pétillante qui rend justice au foisonnement musical de l’œuvre, servie par une distribution d’acteurs-chanteurs car il ne s’agit pas ici de chanter beau. La mise en scène de Robert Carsen est vive, même si elle cède à quelques facilités ; elle ne souffre en tous cas d’aucune baisse de rythme, pour les airs comme dans les passages parlés.
