Steve Cohen est avant tout plasticien, et c’est sous cet aspect-là qu’il a su se singulariser en tant que performeur. De son Afrique du Sud natale, il ne retient pas le folklore, et préfère s’attarder sur des thèmes plus universels ou encore des réalités issues des problématiques sociopolitiques de son pays. Ce nouveau spectacle reprend à son compte l’Afrique du Sud en tant que « berceau de l’humanité » (cradle of humankind). Un poncif que Steven Cohen va transformer, comme un illusionniste, grâce au corps et à l’image, mais en touchant cette fois-ci à plus de dépouillement.
L’humanité en marche
The Cradle of humankind fait notamment appel à des éléments autobiographiques : Steven Cohen invite sur scène Domsa Dhlamini, femme de quatre-vingt-dix ans qui fut sa nourrice. Elle représente ici toute l’histoire de cet homme qui déroule aujourd’hui l’essentiel de son parcours à l’étranger. Il s’est également souvenu des célèbres grottes de Swartkrans, le fameux « berceau de l’humanité » qui fascine tous les visiteurs. Il se saisit de la petite et de la grande histoire pour mieux parler de l’homme, de son évolution, du présent qui se mélange au passé, du passage à la station debout au maintien du corps sur des talons aiguilles.
