Dans The Evening, il y a une serveuse de bar, un boxeur et un entraîneur véreux. Sur fond de chansons pop ou mélancoliques – interprétées en live par un groupe de rock – tous trois « discutent de leur avenir, se battent et jouent leur destin »… Fondateur, en 1999, de la compagnie The New York City Players, Richard Maxwell écrit des spectacles qui, en revisitant des situations quotidiennes inspirées du mode de vie américain contemporain, interrogent notre rapport au réel, à la fiction, à l’existence, au monde tel qu’il est aujourd’hui.
Des « antihéros de la société américaine »
« Je souhaite créer un théâtre qui laisse du temps libre aux spectateurs, déclare l’auteur et metteur en scène new-yorkais, un peu comme si on se baladait dans une bibliothèque ou un musée vide, la nuit. Un théâtre qui puisse exister en-dehors des règles établies, sans avoir à faire scandale ou à user d’effets faciles… » Présentant des « anti-héros de la société américaine », ce théâtre balance entre violence et cocasserie, émotion et dérision. Il creuse les faux-semblants de l’illusion théâtrale et interroge, à travers les contrastes que révèlent ses personnages, différentes possibilités « d’être au monde ».
