Ancien assistant de William Christie, Jonathan Cohen assure en alternance avec Emmanuelle Haim, à la tête des jeunes solistes de l’ensemble vocal et instrumental du Concert d’Astrée, la direction musicale de cette nouvelle production de The Fairy Queen de Purcell. Cet opéra onirique et féerique inspiré du Songe d’une nuit d’été de William Shakespeare marque l’un des sommets de l’œuvre de son auteur. L’oeuvre se présente comme une série de tableaux comprenant airs, danses, interludes et masques. Dans sa mise en scène, Wouter van Looy a souhaité la présence sur scène de danseurs (chorégraphie et vidéo Vivian Cruz) dans une esthétique qui procède volontiers par imbrication d’impressions visuelles évanescentes. Souhaitant donner naissance à un univers inquiétant, le metteur en scène flamand représente les personnages allégoriques et féeriques de l’ouvrage par des costumes-décors, des masques-sculptures et des prothèses animales particulièrement étranges…
