Métaphore de l’homme en recherche, The Great Tamer met en jeu une dizaine de performeurs-danseurs sur un sol instable et en déconstruction constante. Ils y creusent et y découvrent des objets et des histoires révélateurs d’une sorte d’archéologie de la mémoire. Dans une atmosphère onirique ponctuée de références picturales diverses – de El Greco à Magritte -, la performance est nourrie par l’identité grecque de son auteur et par les multiples strates de sa mémoire culturelle. Formé aux Beaux-Arts, c’est d’abord par l’image que Dimitri Papaioannou aborde la création scénique. Des figures de cirque traditionnelles, clowns ou acrobates, participent à cette quête infinie qui oscille entre légèreté et tragique, et vise à fouiller les héritages du passé pour mieux ausculter notre présent, et cette inéluctable propension humaine à la destruction.
