“Comment affirmer la liberté lorsque tout vous emprisonne ?” questionne Hassane Kassi Kouyaté. Cette prison qu’évoque l’acteur et metteur en scène, c’est Robben Island en Afrique du Sud, où croupirent dans des conditions insupportables de nombreux prisonniers politiques, dont Nelson Mandela. Plusieurs membres de la compagnie The Serpent Players, créée par l’écrivain Athol Fugard dans les années soixante et composée d’acteurs noirs, y furent aussi enfermés pour leur dénonciation des injustices de l’apartheid. Certains furent arrêtés pendant les répétitions d’Antigone par la compagnie. Comme Sizwe Banzi est mort,The Island (1973) a été écrite par Athol Fugard, John Kani et Winston Ntshona. Jouée par ces deux derniers, The Island a connu une grandiose tournée internationale.
Duo résistant
Hassane Kassi Kouyaté, fils du grand comédien Sotigui, a l’excellente idée de porter à nouveau à la scène cette pièce poignante qu’il interprète en compagnie d’Habib Dembélé, sur une scène recouverte de sable. Le soir, deux prisonniers, épuisés par le travail sous un soleil brûlant, recommencent à vivre. L’un d’eux ramasse une tasse et passe un appel longue distance pour New Brighton. Ils parlent à la famille et aux amis. Et surtout tous deux préparent une pièce de théâtre, Antigone. L’imaginaire et la puissance du jeu permettent ici de transcender le réel, de vaincre l’avilissement et l’asservissement. La pièce procède d’une « volonté d’imaginer le monde autrement », souligne Hassane Kassi Kouyaté. C’est “un théâtre de participation et de création collective”… Un th
éâtre pauvre, brut, centré sur la force et le plaisir du jeu, en partage direct avec les spectateurs. Dans un duo résistant et rebelle où l’urgence de dire célèbre la force de vivre.
