Présentée au Théâtre des Champs-Élysées il y a six ans, cette production de l’opéra de Stravinsky avait séduit d’abord par la qualité du travail scénique réalisé par André Engel et son décorateur Nicky Rieti. Véritable relecture, mobile et haute en couleur, dans un New York réinventé à la lumière du septième art, la mise en scène offre aux chanteurs une direction d’acteurs nerveuse, dynamique, à la hauteur du foisonnement de la musique, toujours prompte à jouer de la surprise et du pastiche. La distribution, remarquablement emmenée par Thomas Randle dans le rôle du libertin Tom Rakewell et David Pittsinger dans celui du méphistophélique Nick Shadow, est en grande partie réunie de nouveau pour cette reprise. Dans la fosse, l’Ensemble orchestral de Paris, habitué au répertoire néoclassique, est dirigé par l’excellent Frédéric Chaslin.
