Fable hors du temps, The Rake’s Progress a été conçu selon Stravinsky "dans le moule d’un opéra à numéros du XVIIIe siècle" ouvrant la voie à une suite d’arias extraordinaires. L’ouvrage, créé en 1951 pour la scène de la Fenice de Venise, est le fruit de la collaboration du grand compositeur russe avec le poète anglais Wystan Hugh Auden (plume de Britten pour l’opéra Paul Bunyan), en s’inspirant d’une série de tableaux du peintre Hogarth. Dans sa mise en scène, Antoine Gindt met l’accent sur « la soif de liberté » qu’exprime l’ouvrage : « Stravinsky anticipait, sans pouvoir l’imaginer en 1951, la nouvelle époque libertine qui surgirait quinze ans plus tard, de la Californie où il vivait. Elle prend sa source de la nécessité et du désir juvénile de briser les conventions et les carcans d’alors » souligne le metteur en scène, impressionné aussi par « la densité des personnages, la multiplicité des relations qui se tissent, l’étrangeté et la fantaisie des situations – associées au néo-classicisme de la forme et à la beauté de la musique – » qui « créent l’immense potentiel dramatique de l’œuvre ». Créée au Portugal en 2007, cette production connaît aujourd’hui sa création française, sous la direction musicale de Franck Ollu, remarqué à l’affiche du Festival d’Aix-en-Provence en 2008 pour la création de Passion de Pascal Dusapin. Avec l’Orchestre des Lauréats du Conservatoire (CNSMDP), réduit à une petite trentaine de musiciens, et les chanteurs Elizabeth Calleo (soprano), Jonathan Boyd (ténor), Ivan Ludlow (baryton), Allison Cook (mezzo), Johannes Schmidt et Paul-Alexandre Dubois (ténor).
