Il y a vingt ans, le jeune Londonien Piers Faccini achetait des LP africains à Portobello Market. Aujourd’hui, le songwriter expose cet amour au grand jour. Sur son récent album, « My Wilderness », le chanteur folk confirme sa parenté avec le blues du Sahel, invitant même le Malien Badje Tounkara, virtuose du n’goni. Et c’est tout naturellement ce dernier qu’il a convié pour « The River », un projet conçu avec le guitariste Seb Martel : soit un trio de cordes nomades en l’âme propice à naviguer à la coule dans le monde des noires et des blanches. Comme son titre l’indique, ce programme est aussi un clin d’oeil à l’album du même nom d’Ali Farka Touré. « Le fleuve, c’est le Niger, le Mississipi. C’est surtout la métaphore de la transgression des frontières. » Comme la meilleure introduction au Contraband d’Otis Taylor, le chantre d’un trance blues qui plonge dans les méandres du Delta pour en saisir l’essence sombre.
