Une énergie collective à couper le souffle, qui témoigne du travail approfondi mené par Kader Attou, dans ses dernières pièces, sur la notion de masse et de communauté. Des solos teintés de mélancolie, qui donnent à la danse une place existentielle : danser, c’est à la fois évacuer le trop-plein, reprendre de l’énergie, résister à la pesanteur – réintroduire « du jeu ». C’est tout cela que l’on traverse avec les onze danseurs de The Roots : se retournant sur l’histoire de la danse hip hop, Kader Attou ne raconte pas un parcours, mais s’interroge sur « l’ici et maintenant » de cette danse. Ce qui ressort alors, outre l’inventivité chorégraphique et ses métissages, c’est avant tout le danseur lui-même : au-delà de l’écriture, du style, de la composition, il y a, pour reprendre l’expression d’un autre chorégraphe, aujourd’hui disparu (Dominique Bagouet) « des hommes qui dansent ».
